Spring 2021 hands the title of Car Of the Year to a German electric car potentially “for everyone” like the new VW ID.4, but even the sporting world of Porsche marks an incredible step just a few years ago: the Taycan equals the myth 911.
In the first months of 2021 “the electric wins”. This was known by analyzing mobility trends and companies in the sector, but not in detail, not to what extent. Also because electricity wins immediately with that German industry that for decades has been a symbol of something else, with the hegemony “of iron”, combustion and diesel under the bonnets. Today, that industry that has powered a nation and then also part of the world, declines on the electric car and batteries in an irreversible way apparently right. As we have already told, there are factories which, good for workers, continue to churn out mobility products.
The important World Car of the Year award was awarded for 2021 to the new Volkswagen ID.4, which is followed on the podium by Honda and Toyota Yaris. Of course, we cannot translate the award with the phrase “Volkswagen ID.4 is the best car in the world of 2021” but this average Crossover cutting model, unlike other electric cars from VW itself, is sold not by chance everywhere: Europe, America, and China.
Just thinking about the big global cities and urban traffic, in the category of small cars won Honda and, another battery-powered car, elected World Urban Car of the year. In short, two maximum prizes and two electric models say a lot. Also between the votes and the rankings of the World Car of the Year 2021 is worth mentioning the Polestar 2, premium electric with Volvo imprint: on the podium among the Luxury Cars, behind only the historical reference for sedans all over the world, the Mercedes S-Class. Is this segment the latest to “conquer” for electric cars? At least in terms of premiums, it seems so.
After the honors, the practical side sees a historic moment that marks the surge of electric cars in global markets, including Italy (in its small way). And it also touches the world of sports, although in the titles not yet awarded, for evident motoristic tradition difficult to scratch in the street and above all on the track. In any case, the german industry is still the focus of attention with the Porsche myth: the 911 that is overtaken by the electric Taycan, or almost. Stuttgart’s first highly regarded EV, by many lucky Tesla favorites, in 2021 is paired with Ferry and Butzi Porsche’s ingenious invention for global sales numbers. This trend where the Porsche electric “runs” more than the immortal six cylinders in registrations, could continue: with an incredible overtaking already in the coming months.
An overtaking destined to be definitive over time, such as that of visa in other segments? Probably, unlike the 911 in fact, the Taycan quickly innovates its range, with new Cross Turismo versions (4, 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S) that after only two years extend, it would be said “stretch”, the possibilities offered by a premium sports electric (today a reality increasingly desired even by those who have licensed themselves dreaming of the roar of a flat-six).
