The concept of electric mobility is changing: more and more transport-related sectors are becoming electrified.
When we talk about electric mobility, we immediately think of cars. After all, in recent years there has been a very rapid evolution in this sector and there are more and more battery-powered cars on the road. In reality, however, the concept of “electric mobility” is much broader and more and more sectors related to the world of transport are electrifying.
The new electric mobility
In a few years it will not be unusual to see fully electric vehicles whizzing through the skies, in the water and more and more on the roads. Already today compared to years ago the increase has been incredible: in buying a means of transport, for any type of distance, more and more people evaluate the electric as the first choice. Obviously, there are some sectors more ready than others and with an already very wide offer, but we can the gap is destined to narrow a lot.
Electric motorcycles and scooters are growing
In cities, it is no longer uncommon to see electric scooters. In fact, more and more companies are proposing electric alternatives to 50 and 125 cc scooters. Means, therefore, suitable for urban mobility and for limited distances. Two-wheeled vehicles are increasingly appreciated, especially in large urban centers where they can access the areas often forbidden to models equipped with an endothermic engine.
Speech is a little different for electric motorcycles, whose technology is still “unripe”. Putting aside for a moment the prejudices about the absence of the sound of the exhaust terminal, an essential aspect for many motorcyclists, the performance is already very interesting because of the characteristics of the engines, increasingly technological. The limit that holds back many possible buyers lies in the autonomy still too limited due to the batteries that can not have, with current technology, an adequate capacity given the reduced space available. In any case, on the market there are interesting models such as those of Energica and Zero Motorcycles that can recharge from normal columns such as those of Plenitude + Be Charge.
The world of transport is electrified
Those who live in big cities have probably already noticed this. Even public transport is progressively focusing on fully electric vehicles. Think, for example, of the city of Milan which wants to eliminate all diesel buses by 2030, replacing them with electric models. In this regard, ATM Milano has long signed an agreement with Solaris for the supply of several hundred electric buses that also have sophisticated security solutions. Speaking of commercial vehicles, the offer of electric vans and trucks is growing on the market.
You can also travel by electric on the water
Even boating is looking with interest at electrification: we do not mean the small electric boats on the market for some time and also used by tourists, but boats with important performance in terms of speed and autonomy.
In this regard, we cannot fail to mention, for example, Candela, a Swedish company that has made a series of electric boats including the Candela C-8, which acts as a kind of hydrofoil to reduce friction on the water. It has a cruising speed of 24 knots (30 knots the peak one) and can count on a range of up to 50 nautical miles, equal to about 93 km.
8.5 meters long, it can accommodate up to 8 passengers and could be used as a kind of taxi in cities like Venice.
Electric planes, the journeys of the future?
The aviation sector is also carrying out several projects related to electrification. Let’s start with the interesting eVTOL, i.e. electric aircraft with vertical take-off and landing. They are being talked about a lot and it is thought that they may be the future of short-haul transport.
We are talking about aircraft that can be used as flying taxis to connect the increasingly clogged centers of large cities with places such as airports. Several companies and some car manufacturers are investing and working in this area.
In Italy we are already talking about how to regulate these aircraft and the creation of “vertiports“, that is, trivially, mini airports for eVTOL.
Even “traditional” aviation is working on aircraft equipped with electric motors. These are, for the moment, aircraft capable of carrying a small number of passengers, due to the technological limitations of the batteries.
Also scooters and E-bikes
Finally, we cannot forget about all those products that fall into the category of electric micro mobility. We speak, therefore, of the electric scooters that have found space, with some controversy, within Italian cities or eBikes, increasingly appreciated for their flexibility of use.
Excellent means both to move easily and with a limited effort in the city, and to venture into some rough path in the mountains (obviously using a special model such as a mountain bike).
